Why Gearvane
The difference that care and craft make.
We don't compete on volume or speed. We aim to be the watchmaker you trust with the pieces that matter most.

Six reasons people choose Gearvane
Each reason reflects something we've chosen to prioritise, not a feature added for appearances.
Genuine Watchmaking Expertise
Our team works with mechanical, automatic, and quartz movements across Swiss, Japanese, and German calibres — not generalist technicians covering a wide brief.
Clear Communication
You'll hear from us before we do anything that falls outside the agreed scope. No surprises on collection, no unexplained additions to the final figure.
Timing You Can Measure
All mechanical work leaves our workshop having been tested on a timing machine. We regulate to manufacturer specification wherever the movement allows.
Original Parts Returned
For restoration work, we retain and return all original components alongside the finished watch. Nothing is discarded from your piece without your knowledge.
Documented Intake Process
Every watch is photographed and logged on arrival. The record protects you and ensures we're accountable for the condition of each piece in our care.
Suited to Vintage and Rare Pieces
We have experience sourcing discontinued parts and working on movements with limited documentation. Old and unusual watches are welcome here.
Depth over breadth, every time
Each watchmaker at Gearvane has developed specialised knowledge over years of focused practice. Raden leads movement reconditioning, Nadia handles vintage dial and lume work, and Kenji manages timing and quality control. The result is a small team where each person's skills are actually deep.
- Swiss calibre work including ETA, Valjoux, and Peseux families
- Japanese movements from Seiko, Citizen, and Miyota lineages
- Vintage German pocket and wristwatch calibres
"A watchmaker who has worked with a movement type many times develops an intuition that simply cannot be replicated by someone encountering it fresh. That familiarity is part of what we offer."
— Raden Halim, Lead Watchmaker
Equipment that matches the work
- Ultrasonic cleaning equipment for movement and case components
- Precision timing machine for regulation across six positions
- Pressure-testing apparatus for water resistance verification
- Professional loupes and microscope lighting for fine detail work
The right tools, properly used
Good equipment in the hands of someone who understands its limits produces better results than the same equipment used carelessly. We invest in workshop tools appropriate for the work we take on, and we know how to interpret what they tell us.
You're kept in the picture throughout
A watch going into a workshop for repair or restoration can feel uncertain for the owner — particularly if it's a piece of some significance. We try to make that experience feel settled rather than anxious. You'll have a named point of contact, honest timelines, and clear updates.
For Bespoke Restoration work, we share progress photographs at key milestones. For other services, you're welcome to contact us at any point with questions.
Enquiry & Discussion
We discuss your watch and agree on the most appropriate service.
Intake & Assessment
Watch is logged, photographed, and assessed before any work begins.
Skilled Servicing
Work is carried out to the agreed scope with updates as needed.
Quality Check & Return
Final inspection, timing confirmation, and careful return to you.
Pricing that reflects the work
Our service prices are set to cover careful, thorough work — not to undercut by cutting corners. A watch serviced well once costs less in the long term than one handled poorly several times.
Standard Maintenance from MYR 1,450 · Comprehensive Service from MYR 3,600 · Bespoke Restoration from MYR 7,800
Transparent from the start
You'll know what a service costs before we begin. If anything changes during the process, we'll discuss it with you. There are no hidden additions and no pressure to approve work you weren't expecting.
- Pricing agreed before work starts
- No additional charges without prior discussion
- Clear itemisation on request
Work you can see and verify
A serviced mechanical watch should keep time accurately. A resealed case should hold its rated water resistance. A restored dial should look as it was intended to look. We measure outcomes, not just effort.
- Timing machine results shared on request
- Water resistance confirmed to rated specification
- Before and after photographs for restoration work

How we differ
Gearvane versus the typical approach
We're not the right fit for every watch or every owner. But for those who want careful, considered work, here's how our approach differs.
| What to look for | Typical Workshop | Gearvane |
|---|---|---|
| Intake documentation | Often informal or absent | Photographed and logged |
| Timing machine verification | Variable — not always done | Standard on all mechanical work |
| Communication during service | Updates upon request only | Proactive, especially on restorations |
| Scope changes | Sometimes done without asking | Always discussed first |
| Original parts handling | Frequently disposed of | Retained and returned |
| Vintage piece experience | Limited or declined | Welcomed, with specialist care |
| Water resistance testing | Sometimes skipped | Performed where applicable |
What sets us apart
Things we do that others often don't
Progress Photography
Bespoke restoration clients receive photographs at key stages — so you see what's happening, not just the finished result.
Period-Correct Parts
For vintage pieces, we source replacement parts appropriate to the era and calibre — not modern substitutes applied without thought.
Written Service Record
Every watch leaves with a clear summary of what was done, what parts were replaced, and timing results where applicable.
Honest Pre-Assessment
If we believe a watch doesn't need a particular service, we'll say so — rather than performing work to fill an invoice.
